Welcome to the 52nd Head of the Schuylkill Regatta – Virtually Yours.  It is the responsibility of the Coaches and Athletes to be familiar with the 2022 rules and procedures.

EVENT OVERVIEW

The 2022 Head of the Schuylkill Regatta is “virtually yours” providing you the opportunity to compete from wherever you are, on your favorite rowing machine or body of water. We understand you may not be able to join us in Philadelphia, but are thrilled that you will help us further the tradition of the Head of the Schuylkill Regatta, connecting the community with competitors from around the world.

PARTICIPATORY ERG & WATER EVENTS (Asynchronous)

Race 4,150 meters from your favorite place, any time during event week October 23rd – 30th. Competitors may row their piece on any rowing machine that counts distance OR on their favorite body of water, and self-submit their time.  Individual and team events are offered.

Registration will open September 12, 2022 on Regatta Central and will remain open through October 26th.

REGISTRATION

HOW TO MAKE ENTRIES

All entries must be submitted online via RegattaCentral.

Registration for all events will open on September 12th.

The Registration deadline is October 26th at 11:59pm.

Results must be submitted between October 23rd and October 30th, 11:59pm.

REGISTRATION FEES

Entry fees vary by race type.  Participatory YOUTH events are offered at a reduced cost.  All proceeds from registration fees will be dedicated to Philadelphia City Rowing and HOSR Love Where You Row initiatives.

Entry Fees are as follows:

Singles $25; Doubles $40; Quads $50; Eights $60.

Reduced Youth events – Singles $15; Doubles $25; Quads $40; Eights $50.

Fees must be paid in U.S. dollars.  The deadline for full payment of all entry fees is at the time entry is made on RegattaCentral.

There will be no on-site registration or check-in, nor athlete weigh-ins. All race information will be communicated through direct email to registrants, and also listed on www.hosr.org.

REFUNDS

HOSR will refund the entry fee of any entry scratched in writing before 12:00AM EST, October 23, 2022.  We will not refund the fees for an entry withdrawn after this date.

PARTICIPATION IN MULTIPLE EVENTS

Athletes may participate in all components of the HOSR virtual racing week and are permitted to compete more than once in the live event.

ATHLETE CLASSIFICATIONS AND ELIGIBILITY

The age of a rower is determined as of December 31 of the current calendar year.

  1. Youth – U15 Athletes

Persons enrolled in secondary school under the age of 15.

  1. Youth – U17 Athletes

Persons enrolled in secondary school under the age of 17.

  1. Youth – U19 Athletes

Persons under the age of 19.

  1. Championship/Open Athletes

College athletes excepting frosh/novices, and experienced athletes of all levels up to and including elites, are eligible to row in Championship events. No person enrolled in high school.

  1. Collegiate Athletes

Persons enrolled in college or university.

  1. Masters and Veteran Athletes  a. Age rounded down to the highest contained integer, governs, as applicable, both the age-group category and the time adjustment of a given boat in HOSR Veterans events.    b. Masters and Veterans 1x events have age categories of 27-39, 40-49 and 50-59 (no handicap) and 60+ and 70+ (with handicap). A continuous handicap shall be applied to Masters team boats/events.  c.  Except in the Masters Singles events (minimum age 27) all Masters competitors must be at least 21 years old and Veterans Singles scullers must be at least 60. In crews, however, the average age of the rowers will determine the boat’s maximum age-group classification and, for Veterans, its time adjustment in relation to other crews.  d.  A Masters or Veterans single sculler or crew may compete in a lower (younger) age category. No Masters single sculler or crew may compete in a higher (older) age category.

7. Para and Adaptive Athletes

Must be officially pre-classified according to current USRowing standards as either AS (arms and shoulders only), TA (trunk and arms) or LTA (legs, trunk and arms).  All adaptive athletes (along with their able-bodied partners if applicable) must individually have the skill and physical fitness to scull and navigate 4100-4200 meters.

  1. Parent/Child Events

The ‘child’ competitor must at minimum be enrolled in secondary school. Secondary and collegiate athletes should be aware that participation in this event may affect their NCAA eligibility and should consult with coach/school administration. Entries must comply with all general rules governing other events of the HOSR.

  1. Alumni Events  a.  Minimum rowing age for participation (excepting coxswains) is 21. Coxswain excepted, the entire crew must consist of individuals who attended the same academic institution but are not currently enrolled at the institution in question.  b.  Coxswain excepted, the entire alumni crew must be all male or all female, except for the Mixed Alumni Eights, the crew must be 50% male and 50% female, coxswain excepted.  c.  Age adjustment in the computation of results: any alumni crew with an average age (not including the coxswain) of 28 or less will receive no time adjustment. d.  All alumni crews with an average age (not including the coxswain) of 29 and above will receive an age adjustment according to the handicap chart published on the HOSR web site (see Handicap Chart at www.hosr.org under the Competitors tab.
  2. Mixed Events

A mixed crew must be 50% male and 50% female, coxswain excepted.

  1. Lightweight Athletes

A men’s lightweight boat, including a single scull, shall contain no rower who weighs more than 160 lb. A women’s lightweight boat, including a single scull, shall contain no rower who weighs more than 130 lb.  Athletes are on their honor to compete at or under-weight.

In the spirit of inclusiveness, by request, and on a case-by-case basis, we may grant permission to a crew to row in an event for which they do not meet all eligibility requirements.  Said crews are not eligible for medals and will be placed last in the start order.

TIME ADJUSTMENT (or “Handicap”)

With limited exceptions for combined events or sub categories, only Veterans singles, Masters team events, Parent/Child, Alumni, and Corporate events are time-adjusted in the HOSR. The Head of the Schuylkill Regatta uses the official US Rowing Handicap formula times 4.  Tables showing the time adjustments for all applicable events are available on our website (click here).

AFFILIATION

Excepting coxswains, alumni boats, parent/child events, and able-bodied rowers in inclusive crews, every competitor in the HOSR is limited to representing one organization only, or must register as “unaffiliated.” All boats that contain individuals from more than one organization will be designated as COMPOSITE crews. Composite crews are welcome in any category for which they are qualified and will be eligible to win medals; but their performance will not be counted in the tabulation of points trophies.

WAIVERS & USROWING MEMBERSHIP

All competitors must be at least a Basic Member of USRowing and have a signed on-line waiver.  https://membership.usrowing.org/.  Waivers due on Registration Deadline. Please note that all competitors who are minors (under 18) must have their Waiver executed by their parent and/or legal guardian.  If you have any questions regarding this stipulation, email info@hosr.org.

RULES OF RACING

DEFINITION OF A RACE

There must be at least 2 entries in an event to constitute a race.  Competitors must finish ahead of at least one other entry in their category to receive an award.

CHANGES TO EVENTS OFFERED OR EVENT SCHEDULE

The HOSR Regatta Organizing Committee (ROC) seeks to provide a schedule that offers all rowers and scullers a range of opportunities to participate in the regatta. However, the ROC reserves the right to restructure certain portions of the Regatta’s published schedule in advance of the running of said events if, for example, it concludes that an event, or one or more of its sub categories, has not received an adequate number of entries.

PARTICIPATORY ERG EVENTS

Upon registration, registrants will be asked to choose whether they are using an “Concept2”, “RP3”, “Water Rower”, or “Other”.

  1. Equipment

Athletes may race the prescribed meters on any rowing machine with a sliding seat, handle, and monitor. The machine must produce at least the standard units for rowing, including total meters, total time, split/500m, and stroke rate.

  1. Results Submission

Competitors must complete the race on their own time between October 23-30. Athletes shall manually submit their time directly to RegattaCentral from October 23-30 using the following steps.

Log-in to Regatta Central.  In the left column, go to My Entries. You should then see your entry(ies); click on the link that reads “submit results” to the right of the entry.  A box will appear       whereby you write-in your raw time: MM:SS.t   If you registered team boats, you will need to collect data from each competitor to submit in the same manner.

  1. Medical GuidelinesParticipation in the virtual regatta is at your own risk. Please consult your doctor before participating. We strongly recommend you do not row alone. At the very minimum, alert someone of your intensions and check-in with them when you finish.

 

PARTICIPATING WATER EVENTS

Athletes may race the prescribed meters on any body of water. Upon registration, registrants will be asked to choose whether they are “On Water”.

  1. Equipment

Each crew, single, or double is responsible for having a protective “ball” on the bow of the boat.  Each crew or single or double sculler rowing in a shell equipped with flexible sole shoes attached to the foot stretchers is responsible for making sure that the heels of the shoes are attached to the stretchers by a method that allows for quick exit in case of emergency.

  1. Launching and Racing Rules

Athletes are encouraged to practice social distancing while launching, including complying by any local face covering laws and guidelines.  Competitors are expected to comply by their respective body of water’s traffic pattern and rules.

In the spirit of competition, on the water competitors shall make every possible effort to row in conditions with minimal to no current and minimal to no tail wind.

  1. Medical Guidelines

Participation in the virtual regatta is at your own risk. Please consult your doctor before participating. We strongly recommend you do not row alone. At the very minimum, alert someone of your intensions and check-in with them when you finish.

  1. Row at Your Own Risk

When competing in the virtual HOSR, all competitors in singles are expected to be capable of rowing on their own, including competency in flipping procedures and racing etiquette. There will be no race officials during the race week, and all athletes are expected to uphold good sportsmanship and safety precautions.

Medals will be awarded for on water and on land subcategories. For gold, silver and bronze medals to be awarded, a minimum of three entries are required for each event or subcategory. The regatta committee may combine or cancel events or sub categories of events at its sole discretion.  If events or sub categories are combined, a continuous handicap may be applied.

Final results for Participatory events will be posted on RegattaCentral. All results will be accessible through a link on the HOSR web site.

SPORTSMANLIKE CONDUCT

SPORTMANLIKE CONDUCT

As an HOSR participant, you are agreeing to follow the CODE OF CONDUCT.  All participants shall conduct themselves in a respectful manner towards others regardless of race, gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation, religion, political belief, or economic status. Refrain from the use of profane, insulting, or otherwise harassing language and any other behaviors that could be deemed offensive.
