The Head of the Schuylkill Regatta is pleased to announce that Joe Sweeney’s ‘October Regatta’ has been selected as the original art for the cover of the 2022 keepsake HOSR program book. Sweeney’s painting beautifully captures the northern tip of Boathouse Row, Sedgeley Club lighthouse, an iconic landmark in Philadelphia.

HOSR 2022 cover artist, Joe Sweeney’s work is simple and direct, which belies the hours spent looking, thinking and selecting a location. The foundation of most of his work is small ‘plein air’ paintings that often find their way onto larger canvases.

An award winning artist, he has taught or is teaching at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, The University of the Arts, Wayne Art Center, Woodmere Art Museum, and Chester Springs Studio. His work is in many public and private institutions, private collections and museums.  https://www.joesweeneyart.com/

HOSR’s call for 2022 Program Book cover art brought entries from across the community, students, rowers and professional artists. We congratulate Joe Sweeney and all the talented artists who have participated in this HOSR tradition!

A sneak peek of ‘October Regatta’ is shown here. Pick up a free copy of the Program Book in the Information Booth (red tent located at the Three Angels).  In addition, the 2022 Poster featuring the artwork is for sale ($10) at the Information Booth.

The use of the work of local artists began in 2017 when the program book cover featured the work of the award-winning artist, Elaine Lisle, through the generosity of Radclyff ‘Mike’ Thompson. The cover was a success and thus the beginning of the Regatta’s efforts to reach out to the art community and provide an opportunity for a local artist to show their work related to rowing, the Schuylkill River, and/or Boathouse Row.  This community art initiative has received great support over the past 5 years and continues to grow.
