The City of Philadelphia announced on Tuesday that all large public events are cancelled through February 2021, specifically placing a moratorium on permitting for any public events hosting more than 50 people.  While a scaled back Head of the Schuylkill Regatta was among several scenarios being planned in line with USRowing and state and local guidelines, the City’s decision confirms that there will be no on-site regatta in 2020. The HOSR commends the City for its leadership in making this difficult decision and acknowledges that taking this collective action is paramount in keeping participants and the greater community healthy and safe.

In a typical year, regatta planning begins the day after one ends.  But this year, 2020, is anything but typical, and the “possibilities” for a 50th anniversary Head of the Schuylkill Regatta look nothing like those originally envisioned.  While some ideas are set aside to be further developed for 2021, the Regatta Board of Directors are committed to an all-inclusive 2020 virtual event.  The organizing committee is finalizing plans for a virtual format that is both fun and challenging, include elements that are LIVE and inclusive of competitors near and far, for all ages and skill levels. Format details will be released in August with registration beginning in mid-September.  We encourage you to check back often for details about racing, socially distanced events, and special announcements, connecting the community when we need it most.

This 50th year is not only an accomplishment, but a moment in time to set the stage for the future. The HOSR commits to playing a leadership role in the current crisis facing our community. We pledge to use the energy and resources that would have been used to produce the regatta to further support diversity, equity and inclusion. Additionally, we will partner with local organizations and businesses affected by the pandemic lifting one another above and beyond. Together, we can create real impact.
