The Head of the Schuylkill Regatta is a 2.5-mile head race on the Schuylkill River in Historic Fairmount Park/Philadelphia, PA.

NOTE: A rowing head race is one where competitors race the clock sequentially over a course typically 2 – 3 miles long – compared to the spring and summer side-by-side sprint races of 1000 to 2000 meters. Head races are a format that began in England. In the US they typically take place in the fall.

ROWING DEMOGRAPHICS:
• Thousands of students compete in the sport at the high school and college level.

• Many continue to row after graduation, well into their adult and retirement years.

• Increasing numbers discover rowing as adults and more than 50% begin rowing again after the age of 30. It is a sport for a lifetime.

• Above average household income – Average household income for rowers over 30 is $110,000 - $150,000 (2008)

• Above average educations - Over 87% percent of rowers over the age of 25 are college graduates and 47% also hold advanced degrees.


HEAD OF THE SCHUYLKILL DEMOGRAPHICS

• 89% come from the Mid-Atlantic region

• 21% from Greater Philadelphia area

• In 2009 there were rowers from 31 states, 4 provinces and 6 countries.

• 5300+ competed in 2009

• 81% competed in past Head of the Schuylkill Regattas

An additional 1,000 – 5,000 attendees are SUPPORTERS AND SPECTATORS.


VOLUNTEERS:
200+ including referees and marshals (most of whom spend the two days supervising the racing on the water).

1 mile north of Boathouse Row on Kelly Drive – also the main site for trailer parking for out of town schools and clubs.

Festival site includes vendors, exhibitors, artists, entertainment, food, fun, all under a ‘big’ tent

The Three Angels statues, close to the river's edge, are three columns holding aloft Carl Milles’ trio of "Playing Angels” piping and dancing to their music.

Transportation provided to The Three Angels statues from Boathouse Row,

Lloyd Hall and off-site parking: HOSR shuttle makes frequent and continuous round trips that include Lloyd Hall and Boathouse Row.

Parking for spectators is available in sections of the Art Museum and Lemon Hill areas and in off- site parking lots near the race site. Golf carts for spectators will travel from Boathouse Row to the Angels.


NUMBER OF EVENTS IN THE REGATTA

29… including events for recreational, adaptive and community rowers.

Note: The first Head of the Schuylkill Regatta had 12 events: 2 were for women. The current 29 events are broken into categories and age groups.


PHILADELPHIA PHACTS:

Some Boathouse Row clubs date prior to the 1850s. The Schuylkill Navy, an umbrella organization for all the clubs, was founded in 1858.

Boathouse Row is located a few steps from the Philadelphia Museum of Art and less than1 mile from The Franklin Institute and The Academy of Natural Sciences.

Boathouse Row is the world’s only location with 11 rowing clubs situated in less than a quarter-mile;
