U.S. Lotman Challenge
The Gold Cup is the most storied race in Philadelphia’s rich rowing history and one of the most exciting rowing competitions outside of the Olympic Games. The top amateur single scullers compete against each other in a sprint race on the famed Schuylkill River course. The Gold Cup was first awarded in 1922 to Vesper Boat Club’s John B. Kelly, Sr., after he won the 1920 Olympic gold medal in the single sculls. The Cup disappeared in the early 1960s, but was recovered by a group of rowing enthusiasts led by the late businessman and philanthropist Herb Lotman. It was run in 2011 for the first time in over 50 years and will be held again in 2018.
In 2017, The Philadelphia Gold Challenge Cup Foundation, in partnership with USRowing, the Head Of The Charles Regatta and the Head of the Schuylkill Regatta founded the Herb Lotman United States Rowing Challenge. The partners recognized the importance of promoting the development of single sculling in the United States and supporting athletes in their journey to national and Olympic teams. The top American men and women scullers accumulating the most points over the course of the three-race series are awarded cash purses. The race series captures three different racing lengths: 2000m, a head race, and a 700m sprint. Elite US single scullers must compete in all three events to be eligible for the Herb Lotman United States Challenge Series. The 2019 point distribution can be found on The Gold Cup Challenge Foundation’s website.
Felice Mueller and John Graves won the top prize of $9,000 in the event’s inaugural year; John Graves and Gevvie Stone took top prize in 2018.
